Why is the Personal Essay so Important?
The college essay is essential in communicating the attributes that the student will bring to the educational institution. Subsequently, it reveals significant aspects about the student and sheds light on who he or she really is.The college essay also enables admissions counselors to have an in-depth understanding about the students’ academic and personal goals, needs and accomplishments. This is significant since the essay provides the student with a unique opportunity to communicate their level of interest in attending a particular university.
Most importantly, considering that, on average, admissions officers read more than 5,000 essays per year, a well written essay is the best way to help the student stand out as they strive to meet the rigorous standards that govern college admissions.
A Word of Advice
The difference between an essay that is enthusiastically read by a college admissions reader and one that is put aside and potentially sent to the rejection pile will depend, in part, on the students’ ability to grab the reader’s attention with vigor and determination from the onset.
